Participation to the G20 Interfaith Forum, Buenos Aires, Argentina, 26-28 September 2018
September 26, 2018
It was an honour to speak at the G20 Interfaith Summit today in Buenos Aires. The panel focused on the rising tensions between religious freedom and anti-discrimination norms.
We discussed the embemati c case of our times: "The Cake"! If a baker refuses to bake a wedding cake for a same-sex couple, on the grounds of 'freedom of conscience', what to do?
Essentially, two basic rights of individuals are colliding: the right to freedom of religion or belief and the right to equality and non-discrimination. Courts have to make the impossible choice of choosing either freedom or equality.
As the legal community wrestles with this around the globe, I say that we must find a solution where we can maximise both rights. Basically, we must find a way to have our cake AND eat it !!
